Special Thanks to Our Program Sponsor!

The City of South San Francisco is seeking to create partnerships with homeowners who are motivated to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) by creating a new ADU Technical Assistance program for homeowners who are ready to build an ADU, but may be overwhelmed by the process.

The City has hired nonprofit Hello Housing to provide free feasibility and project management support through it's HelloADU program to eligible homeowners and small landlords who want to add an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) to their property. Our team of design and construction experts are ready to help you figure out what is possible on your property, help you identify and vet good professionals to work with and will help support you in the management of your ADU team throughout the entire development process.

"A lot of people don't know how to get started.  The fact that Hello Housing can hold the hands of individuals and walk them through the process is really important" -SSF Councilmember Nagales

Here are the basics:

  • Your property must be a single-family home located on a residentially zoned lot in the City of South San Francisco.

  • You must either own and live in the home that you are adding an ADU/JADU to or own no more than one rental property where you want to add and ADU/JADU unit.

  • You must have access to financial resources to design and build your unit.

  • You must enter into a written lease with your tenant(s), who may be friends or family.

  • You must take a landlord training course prior to leasing your unit.
