A Family Campus Imagined: How One Aptos Family Built Room for Three Generations
For many families in Santa Cruz County, the question isn't whether they want to stay close to one another. It's whether there's any way to afford it. At one 1960s home in Aptos, a set of homeowners found an answer in their own backyard.
Working with the Santa Cruz County ADU Technical Assistance Program, the owners built a brand-new detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The parents will move into the new cottage to downsize and age in place, and their daughter, her husband, and their new granddaughter will move into the main house. One lot, three generations, and independent living for everyone.
The Power of Junior ADUs
The power of a Junior ADU or JADU is the simplicity and affordability of creating new housing within existing space. This JADU project in Santa Cruz brings us particular joy. It’s a delightful one-bedroom apartment on the upper floor of a home full of charming architectural detail, and it allows a wonderful older couple to stay in their home and continue living affordably in their communit

A Homecoming
A few years ago, Kelivn moved to America for a job in tech. It was hard to leave his parents in Hong Kong, especially as a single child. Despite the distance the family has stayed close. When Kelvin purchased his home in Alameda County he quickly decided to build an ADU in his backyard for his parents. It is important for Kelvin that his parents know they always have a home with him.
